Preamble

The UBAG has again submitted a comprehensive document to DSE on 28 February, 2004, expressing arguments that support the UBAG's objections to DSE's proposal to log the '350 Upper Bunyip' forestry block (the '350 Block') in the Dandenong FMA, as set down in the 2004/07 Harvesting Schedule, under DSE's proposed Wood Utilisation Plan.

The UBAG's objections to logging of the 350 Block are based (inter alia) on the loss of very significant national natural assets and values following logging and the need to maintain social values in the Block as a result of the large population growth in surrounding areas. The UBAG has expressed its view that a more fundamental approach needs to be taken by DSE, in conjunction with Parks Victoria, to secure a long-term future for the 350 Block as a reserve for foot-based passive recreation by the people of Melbourne, Victorians in general, interstate visitors, and international tourists.

For reasons that are explained in the document, this block should be declared exempt from currently-scheduled and future logging activities while much-needed scientific research into threatened fauna and flora is conducted there - and to pave the way for its future incorporation into the Bunyip State Park. In particular, a strong argument is presented for excluding the CH23 Rainforest Site of Significance (RSOS) from any future logging plans.

The 350 Block affords wonderful opportunities for activities such as bushwalking, bird observing, observation and appreciation of flora and fauna, picnicking, sketching and painting, and so on. Indeed, there are many 'passive' pursuits that can be accommodated within this relatively-untouched haven, provided it is no longer available for logging and is cared for in ways consistent with these objectives.
